Editor inglés. Heredó la editorial y librería de su padre en 1846. Bajo su tutela, la compañía editó libros de destacados escritores de la era victoriana, como John Ruskin, las hermanas Brontë , Charles Darwin, William Thackeray, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Wilkie Collins, Matthew Arnold, Harriet Martineau y Anthony Trollope. La obra más relevante que publicó fue la primera edición del Dictionary of National Biography [Diccionario de biografía nacional], 66 vol. (1885–1901), que después fue continuada por Oxford University Press. También fundó la revista ilustrada de literatura Cornhill Magazine (1860) y la Pall Mall Gazette (1865), otra publicación dedicada a la literatura.
